Martyn Reynolds 'Non secateur'

A secateur can be a tool. Rather a sickle, than a hammer. When attitudes become form it's predominantly imagined or turns out to be abstract. But let's think of Batman. The bat is hard to see, it orients in the dark, it has wings. Martyn Reynolds' sculptures are no bats, but they share diffuse information - hardly signifying, but oh so real. Think of it as a partly smashed tortilla on supermarket tiles or the sound of an aeroplane disappearing in springtime. A symbol is only a strong thing when you fill it with story and image, colour, emotion and/or meaning. Here's the flaneur getting ready for their sunday walk.


Martyn Reynolds is a New Zealand artist living in Vienna, studying in the Heimo Zobernig class at the Akademie der Bildende Kunst. He graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland in 2005. Recent projects were presented by Shanaynay, Paris; Cole Gallery, London; IMO, Copenhagen; and Kunstnernes Hus/W17 Oslo. He has upcoming projects at La Salle de Bains, Lyon and Rogaland Kunstsenter, Stavanger. This is his second exhibition at Gloria Knight.
