16/04/2013, Megan Hansen Knarhoi - "Jesus Suits Revisited" at Artstation.

Through sculpture and installation Megan's work investigates iconography, signs and symbols. It scrutinises and satirises aspects of Christianity, creating friction between the sacred and profane, positive and negative, and the physical and cerebral. There is a correlation between the repetitive and obsessive-compulsive act of production and ritualistic acts; questioning observance to both art and God as meaningless yet profound.

In many cultures playing card motifs have been appropriated and assigned significance. They signify many things, ranging from religion to currency. Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki, on whom this installation is based, is an enigmatic figure of the Nineteenth century. A self-proclaimed Jehovah, Te Kooti incorporated symbols from playing cards into the iconography of the Ringatū faith he founded. It is within this context that the name Jesus suits.
